GNHF transferred $225,000 to 11 social service agencies during the holidays. The agencies serve the needy in Essex, Union, Passaic, Hudson, Morris, and Bergen counties.

“The generous people and organizations of New Jersey really opened their hearts to their less fortunate neighbors during our 76th year,” said Frank Ferruggia, GNHF president and a partner at Newark-based law firm McCarter & English LLP. “We’ve received thousands of donations small and large from caring individuals, helped by the Star Ledger’s promotion.

“We thank them all.”

John Nietzel, Senior Vice President, Business Banking for Investors Bank (, Chair for the 2013 campaign, stressed the importance of GNHF’s focus on northern New Jersey.

“I’m proud to have played a role in a charity that helps so many people in our region,” said Nietzel. “We’re neighbors helping neighbors during a season when conditions have been tough and agency budgets are stretched.”

Nietzel pointed out that most of the money raised for GNHF’s community-oriented agency partners comes from individuals. “What’s wonderful about GNHF is that it’s people helping other people,” he said. “In a year when a severe winter made life tougher for those who were already struggling, New Jerseyans stepped up and outdid themselves.”

Although the 2013 campaign is officially closed, GNHF continues to accept donations, which will be credited to the 2014 campaign when it opens this coming fall. Those wishing to donate may do so at the website or by phone. GNHF accepts checks, credit cards, or PayPal.
